Lionsgate executives praised the film as “both an homage to Hollywood that is wonderfully familiar and completely unique—modern and classic, and unlike anything else you will see this year.” The description was spot-on—both Gosling and Stone are styled in classic looks—throwback halter dresses for her and him in clean-cut suits. Their dreams bring them together but also end up pulling them apart.
There is no casual wear between this cast, nor are there any tacky 2016 cultural signifiers. When we spoke to Chazelle in 2015, he told us a little more about the project: “It’s a contemporary love story. It’s about how you kind of balance life and art and your dream life with reality, which to me is what musicals are all about.”Chazelle has also spoken about Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers being inspirations for Gosling and Stone’s characters—he plays a jazz musician and she an aspiring actress.
